
Interested in teaching kids or adults to sail?
Become a US Sailing-certified dinghy (Level 1) sailing instructor!
This intensive course sequence prepares you to teach sailing and includes sailing skill evaluation, safety boat handling and rescue techniques, coaching skills, and more.
Prerequisites:
- US Sailing Membership (family or individual, not student)
- Complete SafeSport training (online, approx. 90-min, cost is included with US Sailing membership, annual renewal, 4 year recertification)
- NASBLA approved Safe Boating course (TWRA boating safety course, option training class, exam $10)
- Current First Aid/CPR certification (cost varies, biannual renewal)
US Sailing Steps:
- Teaching a Coach Fundamentals Online (90-min, $15)
- Online self-guided course (6 hours, $175)
- In person course (3 days, 30 hours, $375)
Notes:
- The US Sailing course teaches how to teach sailing. It does NOT teach how to sail or how to operator an outboard motorboat. These skills will be tested but not taught.
- The in person class may or may not be offered at CYC. Check the US Sailing website for class locations.
- Level 1 certification requires renewal every 3 years.
- If you are issued a Plan of Improvement (POI) you must arrange to be retested within 6 months of your initial in person course. This may require additional travel depending on the arrangements you can make with the Instructor Trainer.
